BASIC POWERBOAT FUNDAMENTALS

Suggested Age: 16 - Adult (may be affected by state minimum age)
Certifications Earned: NASBLA certificate, state boating education certificate (in applicable states), safe powerboat handling certificate.
Reading Material: Start Power boating Right, US POWERBOATING

Description: Two day course, students will learn how to safely operate a small motorboat and improve their boat handling skills. This class is approved by the USCG and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). This class is taught on a 18 ft. Powerboat and includes maneuvering, crew coordinating, outboard motors, basic boat
handling concepts, VHF, navigation, and environment information.
The Cost: $295 Private class (two student maximum) $750

ADVANCED POWERBOAT FUNDAMENTALS
Prerequisites: Basic Powerboat Fundamentals

Description: Two day course, students will learn how to safely operate a larger motorboat and improve their boat handling skills. This class is a approved by the USCG and the NASBLA. This class is taught on 20 ft. Powerboat and includes inboard engine systems, advanced boat handling, on-board systems, weather, launching, & trailering.
Cost: $495 Private class (no more than two students) $1095

TWIN SCREW POWERBOAT FUNDAMENTALS
Prerequisites: Basic and Advanced Power Boating Fundamentals
Suggested Age: 18 & up

Description: This is a two day course and includes handling a heavier , more powerful complex yachts. The class is taught on a 30 ft twin screw Luhrs that includes maneuvering in confined quarters, open water, and with one engine. The class will cover the more complex systems found on larger boats.
Cost: $995 There is an additional fuel charge of $100 per student. Private $2595

COASTAL POWERBOAT CRUISING
Prerequisites: Basic & Advanced Boat Fundamentals, and Twin Screw Powerboat Fundamentals (I think that we should definitely make people learn how to run a twin screw before we run a live-aboard on it.)
Suggested Age: 18 & up

Description: The class is taught on a 30’ twin screw Luhrs and includes a two day course in and about coastal Southern California. The course focuses on navigation, fuel management, crew management, and heavy weather tactics.
Cost: $1695 Private $3695 There is an additional fuel charge of $100 per person not included in class price.

COASTAL NAVIGATION
Prerequisites: None
Reading Materials: Coastal Navigation Book with practice chart and DVD produced by ASA
Description: This class can either be taught over two consecutive weekends or done as a home study. Students must demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. There are no sailing skills as part of this standard; the skills are incorporated into the 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard.
The Cost: For members, co-members and non-members the cost of the class is $275. Testing and Certification only with optional review, cost is $175. With a minimum of 3 students any class can organize with advanced notice. Private classes can also be organized to fit your schedule.

The American Sailing Association is one of the four premier sailing schools in the United States. Seaforth Sailing Club offers the best instruction for beginner through advanced sailing. Our ASA certified Sailing Instructors can teach you everything from the basics of sailing a 22' sailboat in the sheltered waters of San Diego Bay or Mission Bay to the skill level necessary to skipper a 50' sailboat to Catalina Island or to charter a boat in the Bahamas. Basic Keelboat Sailing (ASA 101)

Reading Material: Sailing Fundamentals by Gary Jobson (pg 1-134)
Description: A two-day course going from 9-3 both days, sailors will sail a Capri 22' in moderate wind and sea conditions in the San Diego Bay. A preparatory Standard with no navigation skills required. As the Basic Keelboat (101) is a prerequisite for further ASA certificates, we suggest you sign up! This course is taught with 3-4 students per instructor. When you complete the Basic Keelboat course you are able to captain a vessel up to 25'.
The Cost: Free for members of our Sailing Club, $199 for club co-members, and $249 for non-members.

Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103)
Prerequisites: ASA 101
Reading Material: Sailing Fundamentals by Gary Jobson (pg 135-204)
Description: A two-day course going from 9-5 both days taught on either a Catalina 270, or 320. Sailors must cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary powered sailboat in moderate winds and sea conditions.
The Cost: For members and co-members of our Sailing Club the cost is $310, and $420 for non-members.

Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104)
Prerequisites: ASA 101 & 103
Reading Material: Cruising Fundamentals by Harry Munns
Description: A two-day live aboard class starting at 9am and finishing at 5pm the following day. Sailors will act as skipper and crew on a Catalina 320 while they practice both day and night sailing in coastal waters. Sailors will gain skills in maintenance, boating systems, navigation, anchoring and more.
The Cost: For members and co-members of our Sailing Club the cost is $395, and $495 for non-members.

ASA 103 & 104 Combination Class
Prerequisites: ASA 101
Reading Material: Sailing Fundamentals by Gary Jobson (pg 135-204) and Cruising Fundamentalsby Harry Munns
Description: A four-day trip to Catalina Island with duel cruising certification of ASA 103 and 104. This is a live aboard course, which generally leaves at 9am on a Friday and returns Monday morning. Students will have a unique opportunity to learn not only the skills of the 103 and 104 but also how to provision a boat for short term cruising.
The Cost: For members and co-members of our Sailing Club the cost is $750, and $795 for non-members.

Coastal Navigation (ASA 105)
Prerequisites: None
Reading Material: Coastal Navigation Book with Practice Chart produced by ASA
Description: This class can either be taught over three evenings from 5-9pm or done as a home study. Sailors must demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in costal or inland waters. There are no sailing skills as part of this standard.
The Cost: For members and co-members and non-members the cost of the class is $275. If you choose to do the class as a homestudy the cost is $175.

Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106)
Prerequisites: ASA 101, 103, 104, & 105
Reading Material: Annapolis Book of Seamanship by John Rousmaniere and Mark Smith
Description: A three-day live aboard course, which leaves at 9am and returns in the evening of the third day. Sailors will act both as skipper and crew on a Catalina 320. This is a day and nighttime standard in coastal and inland water and in any weather.
The Cost: For members and co-members of our Sailing Club the cost is $850, and $975 for non-members.

Get ASA certified
All of our Sailing classes are taught in accordance with the American Sailing Association Standards. Upon completion of our courses you will earn a Seaforth Sailing School Certification and be eligible to earn your ASA certification. In order to receive an ASA certification, ASA requires a one time fee of $39. This cost will include a 1 year membership to ASA, a 1 year subscription to Sailing Magazine, certification seals for all levels achieved, and an ASA certified sailor ID card. American Sailing Association is a world-wide recognized sailing school and sets the standards for sailing certifications. Check out www.asa.com for more details.
Take the 101 Challenge
Sailors who already have the skills necessary to pass the 101 Basic Keelboat class can challenge the course. There is a private on the water sailing skills portion to the certification, including a knot test as well as the written exam. Sailors should read Sailing Fundamentals by Gary Jobson to page 134 to see if they will be prepared for the challenge.
The Cost: For members and co-members and non-members the cost is $139
5 DAYS OVERNIGHT VACATION PACKAGE
COMBO A.S.A. 101 + 103 CERTIFICATION
This program has been designed for people who would like to learn how to sail large vessels and have a week long vacation in beautiful San Diego at the same time.
You will experience living aboard on a beautiful Catalina 320 for 5 days and get certified through the American Sailing Association (A.S.A) for the 101 Basic Keelboat class and the 103 Coastal Cruising class.
YOUR VACATION SCHEDULE WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:
Monday: get yourself comfortable onboard your luxurious 32' Yacht. Around 10:00 am start your 101 Basic Keelboat course on a Capri 22'. Free time after 4:00 pm to study or enjoy the San Diego nightlife and your first night aboard.
Tuesday: completion of the 101 course on the Capri 22 .
Wednesday: practice and polish your new skills on your own while sailing the Capri 22.
Thursday: begin the Coastal Cruising course on board your Catalina 320.
Friday: completion of the 103.
