At Seaforth Boater Education we offer sailing classes and lessons for every level of sailor, from beginner to advanced. If you are just starting out, we offer the Amercian Sailing Association's Basic Keelboat Sailing course designed to teach the beginner the fundamentals of sailing. If you have been sailing for a while in the bays and are interested in getting more out of your sailing, take a look at our 3-Day or 4-Day ASA 103/104 Combo Class where you can learn more advanced coastal sailing techniques. Basic Keelboat Sailing (101)
Reading Material: Sailing Made Easy by ASA
Description: A two day course, students learn to sail a Capri 22’ in moderate wind and sea conditions in San Diego Bay. A preparatory standard with no navigation skills required. This is a prerequisite for further sailing classes. At the end of this class you will be certified to rent and sail up to our 25ft boats.
The Cost: Free for members of our Sailing Club, $199 for Sailing Club co-members, and $349 for non-members.
Reading Materials: Coastal Cruising Made Easy by ASA
Description: A two-day course going from 9-5 both days. Sailors must cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary powered sailboat in moderate winds and sea conditions.
The Cost: For Sail Club members and co-members the cost is $350, and $470 for non-members.
Prerequisites: 101 & 103
Reading Materials: Cruising Fundamentals by Harry Munns
Description: A two-day live aboard class starting at 9am and finishing at 5pm the following day. Sailors will act as skipper and crew while they practice both day and night sailing in coastal waters. Sailors will gain skills in maintenance, boating systems, navigation, anchoring and more.
The Cost: For Sail Club members and co-members the cost is $449, and $499 for non-members.
Reading Materials: Coastal Cruising Made Easy by ASA and Cruising Fundamentals by Harry Munns
Description: This is a 3 day local course with duel cruising certification of 103 and 104. This accelerated live aboard course is meant for advanced sailors. You will embark at 6am on a Friday and return Monday 5 pm. Students will have a unique opportunity to learn not only the skills of the 103 and 104 but also how to provision a boat for short term cruising.
The Cost:3-Day course: For members & co-members the cost of the class is $695, and $765 for non-members.
Reading Materials: Coastal Navigation Book with solutions workbook, practice chart and DVD produced by ASA
Description:This class is taught as a home study. Students must demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. There are no sailing skills as part of this standard; the skills are incorporated into the 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard.
The Cost: For members, co-members, and non-members Testing and Certification only the cost is $135. Tutoring available at $25/hour, 2 hour minimum.
Prerequisites: 101, 103, 104, & 105
Reading Materials: Annapolis Book of Seamanship by John Rousmaniere, and Mark Smith
Description: A four-day live aboard course to Catalina, which leaves at 9am and returns in the evening of the fourth day. Sailors will act both as skipper and crew. This is a day and nighttime standard in coastal and inland water and in any weather.
The Cost: 3-Day course: For members & co-members the cost of the class is $900, and $975 for non-members.
Cruising Catamaran Class (114)
Prerequisites: 101, 103, 104
Reading Materials: Multihulls Fundamentals by Rick White with Harry Munns
Description:Held from 9AM to 5PM at Mission Bay on our Gemini 35 Catamaran. Students will learn maneuvering with a twin screw sail boat in tight quarters under control. Proper tacking and jibing and many more idiosyncrasies of handling a Cruising Cat. Class includes: springing off docks, controlled backing, 350 degree “standing turns”, docking and more.
The Cost: For members, co-members, and non-members the cost of the class is $175.
Take the Challenge
Sailors who already have the skills necessary to pass the Basic Keelboat level can challenge the course. There is a private on the water skills portion, including a knot test, as well as the written exam. Sailors should read Sailing Made Easy by ASA to see if they will be prepared for the challenge.The challenge will generally take 3 ½ hours or less to complete.
The Cost: For members, co-members and non-members the cost is $189.
Get ASA Certified
All of our sailing classes are taught in accordance to the American Sailing Association Standard. With our courses, you’ll earn a Seaforth Sailing School Certification. You can earn the equivalent ASA certification for an additional cost of $39. This cost will include a certification seal, ASA certified sailor ID card, and a membership to ASA. American Sailing Association is a worldwide recognized sailing school and sets the standard for sailing certifications. Check out www.asa.com for more details.
