ASA 106: Advanced Coastal Cruising

Description

A four-day live aboard course to Catalina, which leaves at 9am on Friday and returns in the evening on the following Monday. Sailors will act both as skipper and crew while sailing along the coast to Catalina.

Advanced Coastal Cruising (106)

• Prerequisites: 101, 103, 104, & 105
• Reading Material: Annapolis Book of Seamanship by John Rousmaniere, and Mark Smith
• Description: ASA 106 covers advanced seamanship and navigation techniques, a wide spectrum of weather conditions, day and night sailing offshore, additional emergency procedures and boat engineering. Additional experience is developed with trip planning, safety equipment, advance procedures, provisioning, boat systems, and personal gear necessary for longer offshore ocean passages.
  
  The Advanced Coastal Cruising course spans four days and involves overnight stays on a 35′ or larger yacht, with three to five students and one instructor. Approximately 95% of the class time will be spent on the water. The primary aim of this course is to refine the skills of experienced sailors in both skippering and navigation.
  
  Before the trip, the instructor will delegate provisioning responsibilities for all meals to the students. All provisions are provided by the students, including for the instructor.
  
  On the first day by noon, the group will set sail for Catalina, CA, proceeding to the next anchorage. Throughout the four-day journey, participants will engage in on-the-water instruction, share meals, and enjoy camaraderie with fellow sailors.
  
  The reading material and homework mentioned earlier serve as valuable preparation for the written exam. Practical exams will be conducted during the sailing expedition and upon the return to San Diego.
  
  Instructors will be contacting students about two weeks before the course to advise students on what to expect and bring on this advanced coastal cruising course.
